Vergil's Downfall actually tells the story of Vergil's Rise after he was defeated in the main game by Dante . The game picks off where Dante wounds Vergil mortally and allows him to leave without killing him .The wounded Vergil slowly drags himself over to the grave of his mother where he kinda of gets teleported back to the gates of his old home . After saving Kat from a Monster Vergil comes face to face with the hollow version of him which goads / guides him to achieve the ultimate power and become the DEMON KING finally .
The story progress ain't that much but still Vergil's downfall packs quite a punch and comes around as refreshing new game . The environments kinda of look the same with Limbo and the demon enemies you fight against . There are a variation of some enemies that pop up , but their attack styles are so similar to the old enemies in the main game that you wont feel much of a difference . Once thing I noticed immediately was that the enemies were a lot tougher to defeat than in the main game . Maybe its because of the slow response of Vergil to our commands or the lack of some special moves and attacks that his brother basted off,. If you thought Dante moved slow , wait till you get a load of this :D
Although initially you will find Vergil to be damn slow his angel power kind of gives you the edge over enemies . Which involves a slashing attack that throws his enemies away and of course the whirl wind attack that you can use to take down enemies that surround you . Angel mode and Demon mode have been nicely configured according to Vergil's abilities , which looks cool when you get to execute it . I loved the dodge executed by Vergil much more than the one his bro was capable of . Vergil's dodge looks like he teleports himself for a short distance and is ultra cool to look and you will be blown away easily . You will find yourself using it more often than necessary . The Katana- Yamato's basic attacks are too slow and pathetic initially but once you upgrade them, it doesn't pack a punch but it takes you by .
Since Vergil doesn't have a gun he summons swords that forms the basic long distance attack . The demon powers can make the swords to revolve around him as a shield or attack an enemy at a time making them to squirm and die. And the Doppelganger power is the most awesome of Vergil's Demon Powers . It creates a blue Aura of replica Vergil but is capable of providing attacks for him and preventing him from taking damage. Quite effective and lethal when used in battles . Loved this power in him .
Doppelganger Power |
Although the game is not that big , for a DLC , this game packs a huge amount of playing time guaranteed to keep you hooked for atleast 2 hrs of gaming time . It can get addictive as the story progress, keeps you enthralled . The one thing that you will find a little funny was the inclusion of Comic Book Image style narration of the cutscenes . I don t know why they did that , maybe they were too lazy to create a video cutscene with the actual game characters :P. But still the anime look to the cutscenes spices it up and makes you think you are playing a different game.
The fight b/w 2 Vergils cutscene |
The boss fights was hugely satisfying (i.e) compared to the pathetic boss fights that Dante had. The fight with the hollow Vergil is the best . Makes you think of the original Boss fights that DMC series was famous for . Damn hard , believe me ,. For the first time in in DMC 5 i found myself using a Vital star . Tats how tough the guy was.
Hollow Vergil |
And the ending is the usual cinematic ending that games are famous for nowadays . Nothing new .
Anime Like Cutscene |
Pro's ::
1. 2 hrs of pure addictive fun with Dante's Bro Vergil with the evil looking Yamato to slice up enemies with
2. New techniques and combos that stands apart uniquely from Dante's moves .
3. Anime like cutscenes are much cooler and less emotional than the original's boring cutscenes .
4. Enemies are a little difficult when compare to the other game and comes after us in Wave after wave .
Con's ::
1. Yamato is very slow to wield .
2. Ending is too Cliched.
3. Same traversal techniques , could have varied it a little bit .No challenge in gaining in new powers as they are simply given to you .
4. Upgrades are easily given and surplus due to the short campaign.
Overall:: A Must play for all as it slightly touches the tip of the iceberg of what the DMC series was famous for
Rating : 8.8 /10
